Tracking Down Roofing Issues

3 Tips To Deal With Minor Storm Damage And Save On Roof Repairs

When a storm has come through your area, it is possible that you will have to deal with damage to your roof. Sometimes, the damage is serious, but it is often minor problems that you can repair yourself. When you have a little wind damage or small leaks, quick repairs will help prevent more serious damage to your home. Here are some tips to help you deal with minor storm damage to your roof:

1. Patch Leaks and Small Damage to Shingles

The shingles on your home may have light damage caused by wind, heavy rain and pre-existing wear. If the problem is only a small leak, you may want to patch it with asphalt roofing cement. Use a caulking gun to apply roofing patch anywhere there are leaks. This is something that you will want to do even if your roof needs replacement. Patch the leak and contact a roofing contractor to inspect your roof and recommend repairs or replacement. The temporary patch of leaks will prevent further water damage to your home.

2. Replacing Shingles That Have Been Damaged in High Winds

Storms often bring high winds with them, and your asphalt shingles are not designed to withstand some of these gusts. The wind blows the bottom of the shingles up, causing tears or completely blowing the shingles off. This damage is often isolated in areas where shingles are more vulnerable or may only be a single shingle that has been blown up in the wind. To repair this damage, remove the old shingle or whatever is left of it and replace it with a new one.

3. Inspecting and Locating Damage Caused by Hail Storms

When storms bring hail with them, the damage to your roof may be worse than what you can see. It is a good idea to have a roof inspection done to evaluate damage from hail. This damage may be light and in isolated areas of your roof, or it could be wide-spread roof damage. Sometimes, the smaller damage can be repaired by replacing the damaged shingles, but there may also be damage that is less visible. Have a roofing contractor inspect your roof, document the damage and give you a written estimate for repairs because sometimes it can be difficult to get insurance claims for roof damage.
